HOW TO PLAN A WINTER WEDDING. A PLANNER’S EXPERT TIPS

The festive season may be behind us, but in many parts of the world, there’s still a few months of cold weather and hot drinks to go before we can call it spring.

While a wedding in the colder months does present its challenges, it’s also an opportunity to get thoroughly creative.

There’s definitely something magical about this time of the year – huddling around open fires, the crisp clear blue skies and light dusting of frost or snow across the landscape.

So it’s no surprise that more and more couples are opting for a winter wedding, but planning one does mean you have to make certain considerations that you may not have thought of.

1. KEEP WARM

One of the first things it’s important to consider in any wedding, is your guest comfort and experience.

2. LIGHT IS EVERYTHING

Lighting has an impact, not only on your photographs, but also on the styling and ambience of your venue.

By the time guests sit to eat the wedding breakfast, it will likely be dark.

Stick to warm white tones and you’ll create a gorgeous, twinkling effect.

3. THE MENU

Work with your caterer to plan a meal that is warming and seasonal – winter food doesn’t have to be heavy and stodgy, there are some great seasonal options at this time of year so get creative. For the evening, you could even set up a hot chocolate bar, with warm, steaming mugs that guests can personalise from a beautifully styled station.

4. BE PREPARED

A snowy wedding day would certainly look beautiful in your photographs, but snow can wreak havoc with your plans, so make sure that you offer your guests lots of local accommodation options and brief your suppliers to allow plenty of time for arrival and set up.

Or better still, if budgets will stretch, book a wedding planner who can brief all suppliers on your behalf, to prepare and put into practice contingency plans on the day.

3 THINGS YOU CAN ONLY DO ON A WINTER WEDDING

3 THINGS YOU CAN ONLY DO ON A WINTER WEDDING

Since fewer weddings take place during these chilly months, yours will naturally stand out, and there are so many wonderful ways to embrace the season!

Here are our top 3 things you can get away with if you plan on getting married in the winter season:

1. Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow....

So yes, think about this: Make it snow as you walk down the aisle or during your couple’s first dance together.

We promise you it will look MAGICAL!!!

2. Behind the Bar. Heat it UP!

Winter drinks are the best! Think about Hot-Chocolate Bar with different mix ins: candy canes, marshmallows, cinnamon + alcohol to enhance the flavour!

3. Free Decor for Everyone

If you plan on getting married around the winter holidays, chances are the venue is already filled with themed decorations so you will only have to fill in the gaps, like centerpieces and flowers here and there. So WIN-WIN!

HOW TO PLAN A PHOTOGENIC WEDDING MENU

HOW TO PLAN A PHOTOGENIC WEDDING MENU

HOW TO PLAN A PHOTOGENIC WEDDING MENU

Let’s face it: everyone loves good, professional photos. But the magic does not happen just by letting the photographer do his thing. If you want to have a special photogenic wedding, we as a planner have to take into account lots of details. Like wedding menus and how to make them look special on camera and off camera too.

To get picture-perfect food, you have to start by planning a photogenic menu.

1. WHITE PLATES.

The plates you use to serve your guests have a significant impact on how any food will look at your wedding. You may worry using white plates will look boring, but it’s the best thing you can do for your food.

White plates make every dish look more vibrant, enticing people to take a closer look and maybe even a bite or two.

2. DECIDE ON A SERVING STYLE.

Making your wedding food look pretty will depend on how you choose to serve it. Have you thought about that yet? Your guests can get their food from a buffet-style setup, or have servers bring the plates of food out to them.

3. TALK WITH YOUR CATERER.

Most likely, your wedding is not the first event your caterer has worked. Talk with your caterer to see if they have a history with making food into picture-perfect plates. They might be able to suggest types of food or preparation techniques that will change what you picture people eating at your wedding.

4. AIM FOR VARIETY.

Variety is the spice of life, especially when it comes to planning your reception menu. Your guests will want at least some kind of choice in their food. Whether they get to serve themselves at a buffet or choose between two entrees on the menu, they’ll appreciate having a variety to choose from. It especially helps those who have food allergies or kids who are picky eaters.

Having a variety of food will also make your pictures turn out much better. You won’t end up with a million identical photos of baked potatoes. Instead, you’ll get to look back on guests having a great time while eating different salads and desserts.

3 REASONS WHY I LOVE DESTINATION WEDDINGS

3 REASONS WHY I LOVE DESTINATION WEDDINGS

3 REASONS WHY I LOVE DESTINATION WEDDINGS

I honestly feel so happy when I have a trip coming up in my agenda. I think it’s so exciting to step off a plane in a new place (or a beautiful one I’ve visited before). So for this reason, planning a destination wedding really excites me!

THE WEATHER

WE GET TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT

A destination wedding is an excuse to break away from wedding traditions. You can think outside the box. Experiencing a new culture and taking on some of their traditions is a great way to add a unique twist to your wedding day.

SPENDING LONGER WITH THE WEDDING PARTY

I always think destination weddings are lovely as (most of the time) the wedding party is quite small. The pressure is off having to spend time going round everyone because there’s less people, less stress for the couple. We get to also control how the day is going and make sure everyone is taken care of!

Would you get married abroad? Did you get married abroad? What are your pro’s and con’s to a destination wedding?

Securing Your Date and Guest Accommodations

Dates and locations are crucial when planning a destination wedding. Please make sure you book your event and your guests room in advance and plan ahead for any inconveniences that may occur. Two weeks before the actual event, email aor call the venue and hotel to make sure the reservations are still ok. We know this step is also a hustle, if you don’t want to manage the stress, leave it to a planner.

Don’t Skimp on Guest Care

You need to take care of your guests. Not only on your wedding day, but also throughout their stay.

Make an itinerary for them if some come earlier or would like to extend their stay.

EXPERT ADVICE: SHOULD YOU THROW A DESTINATION WEDDING?

EXPERT ADVICE: SHOULD YOU THROW A DESTINATION WEDDING?

EXPERT ADVICE: SHOULD YOU THROW A DESTINATION WEDDING

Home or Away? Today this is the question. We are giving you some real talk on destination weddings and if you are ready to get involved into an adventure like this.

Hands-on Approach

When getting married at home, wedding planning can feel easier to manage and control; you can pop over to the venue as and when you want, you may have suppliers in mind already and it’s unlikely there will be any language barrier.

You can take a very hands-on approach if you so wish.

So if you like adventure, if you are a hands on couple, it will be much easier!

If however, you’re happy to pass your wedding planning woes onto a professional who can assist, then a destination wedding is absolutely worth your consideration.

Legalities

If you’re getting married at home then your options for the ceremony should be fairly straightforward.

But restrictions in your chosen destination that limit whether you can have a legally recognised wedding either in the country or more specifically within the grounds of your chosen venue.

Rules may differ from your home country, and will vary based on the type of ceremony that you want, so make sure you do your research on this before committing. Research or let a wedding planner deal with it.

What are Your Reasons?

You need to establish your reasons as to why would you like to travel abroad and plan this.

Is it because you love your chosen destination? Have a specific vision for your wedding? Have special memories there?

If yes to any of the above, then these are the right reasons to think about getting married abroad – it’s what you want, and ultimately that is what your wedding is about.

Above everything, the deciding factor really should be what is right for the two of you? Usually, when you stick to this principle, everything else falls into place as it should.
